Rayon as manufactured by CORDENKA is a special technical viscose yarn with unique properties fit for high performance applications. As other viscose fibers, rayon is made of the renewable resource cellulose – making use of natural carbon removal.
Endless fiber based on regrowing resources
Unlike other nature-based fibers, however, rayon is an endless material by default, due to the continuous spinning in the production process. In contrast to fossil-based plastic fibers, rayon is independent of fossil carbon, as it solely uses cellulose that comes from trees.
Trees remove CO2 from the atmosphere upon the natural process of growth process and therefore contribute to the removal of atmospheric CO2.
This occurs in shape of natural removal of CO₂ out of the atmosphere. In addition to its natural origin, the material is also biodegradable, closing the loop for a circular life cycle.
Product specifications and properties
CORDENKA® Rayon yarn consists of very fine filaments. The number of filaments can be chosen from 720 to up to 2000, resulting in yarn with linear densities in a range from 1220 to 3680 dtex. The properties of the material are characterized by high heat aging and chemical resistance, high modulus, thermal and dimensional stability, and low hysteresis.
The yarn is the basic source material for all further CORDENKA® Rayon products, such as cord and fabric – or chopped fiber and cord.

Reinforcements for thermoset and thermoplastic composites
CORDENKA® Rayon woven fabrics are optimized for the reinforcement of lightweight composites. The fabrics are available with different weaving patterns and grammature (200–600 g/m²).
CORDENKA fabrics provide stiffness and strength on the one hand and impact resistance on the other. By that, CORDENKA fabrics can be used for the construction of lightweight composite parts with excellent energy absorption behavior. The combined use of CORDENKA fabrics with other reinforcements, e.g. carbon fabrics, provides intelligent cost-saving composite design opportunities.
Viscose shortcut fiber and cord – a rayon product for special applications
Chopped rayon fibers are made in a subsequent process, where CORDENKA® Rayon multifilament yarn is cut into fibers with various lengths from 2 to 125 mm. The shortcut fibers are mainly used as input in the production chain of rayon reinforced pellets. In a similar way, chopped rayon cord is made of twisted rayon cord that is cut into short pieces. Among other applications, chopped cord can be further processed to rayon fiber wadding.
