CORDENKA emphasizes the importance of responsible water and land use. With sustainable waste and water management, high ecological standards and a systematic permanent improvement, Cordenka is taking responsibility for a sustainable production and supply-chain management.
Depletion of ground water and the occupation of land are two major factors of environmental sustainability. This is why Cordenka mainly uses river water and raw material from certified forests.
In order to minimize the consumption of ground water, Cordenka uses river water wherever possible. For cooling, water directly taken from the river Main is used. This water is only emitted into the air to a very small extent, most of the water is directly given back to the regional ecosystem of the river.
Other production processes rely on clean well water. Most of it, however, is not sourced from ground water. Instead, the well water is gained by intended percolation with water originating from the local river Elsava. Free from pollution, most of this water is also emitted back into the ecosystem.
Main raw material for the production of rayon is cellulose wood pulp. Cordenka ensures that only material with at least a Controlled Wood claim according to the FSC® rules is used in the supply-chain. Beyond that, Cordenka offers products with a FSC® Mix claim. This guarantees that only certified wood from responsible sources is used in the production.
CORDENKA is not only taking responsibility for the input materials, but also for waste and wastewater occurring in the production. Reused waste and proper water management spare the local environment.
More than half of the total waste mass accumulated at Cordenka is reused. The waste partially fuels the production of energy and substantially feeds other production processes. The remaining part of the regular waste is mainly incinerated.
The majority of the used cooling and process water is unpolluted or conditioned as such. This part of waste water is directly released back into the biosphere it was taken from. This procedure keeps the environment as unspoiled as possible.
Wastewater containing pollutants is processed at the local sewage plant, which combines the treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater. Due to its different composition, municipal and industrial wastewater complement each other leading to a favored pH number at the sewage plant.
By underlying the European environmental rulings, following the ISO 14001 management norm and using inland water and railways, Cordenka stands for a highly ecological business operation.
The CORDENKA production sites are located in Germany and Poland meaning that both factory sites operate in compliance with the strict environmental rulings of the European Union, i.e. the REACH regulation and others.
CORDENKA is certified by the internationally recognized norm ISO 14001. It defines standards for the environmental resource management focusing on a continual improvement process. In the past decade, CORDENKA significantly improved energy efficiency and is currently projecting the reduction of water consumption.
The main factory site of Cordenka in Obernburg, Germany, is directly connected to inland waterways and the rail network. Raw and auxiliary process materials are mainly delivered resource-efficiently to the site by train or barge. Manufactured products can also be sent to the customer using the railway.
Ecological sustainability at CORDENKA: responsible production, bio-based materials, sustainable innovations.
