Biobased
Material

Sustainable Raw Materials.

At CORDENKA, our commitment to sustainability starts with our main raw material: wood pulp. This essential ingredient is both bio-based and 100% renewable and is primarily sourced from the USA. The wood we use comes from plantations, so we ensure that no wood from virtual forests is used. We carefully monitor our pulp suppliers to ensure that they use sustainable forestry practices. Our suppliers are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC), the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI).

FSC® Certified Raw Material

For customers who are interested in specific certifications, we offer CORDENKA Rayon® products with the FSC Mix claim.

We actively contribute to improving environmental performance throughout the value chain, which in turn improves the environmental impact of our end products and enables our customers to prevent microplastic pollution. Because Rayon is an enabler of the bio-based circular economy.

One of the most important issues of our time is the climate crisis, which requires co-operative solutions from a wide range of relevant parties, including authorities and partners in the value chain.
In addition to fully sustainable-certified raw materials (FSC®), CORDENKA is also committed to the topic of energy and to the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to reduce
CO2 emissions. With every measure implemented, our product becomes even more sustainable and its CO2 footprint decreases.

CORDENKA emphasizes the importance of responsible use of water and land.

Ecological end-of-life options – Composting & recyclability

Concerning the end-of-life treatment, Rayon offers several beneficial opportunities. It can be either composted, left in the environment or further used by recycling, combustion or as an efficient resource for biogas production.

Cellulose shows superior biodegradability compared to other polymers, such as PLA, PBAT or other bio-plastics. Biodegradability is approved according to established standards and verification schemes in various environments: marine and freshwater, home and industrial composting, soil, landfill and anaerobic digestion [Source: nova Institut GmbH].

Rayon-reinforced thermoplastics show superior recycling properties: during processing, Cordenka Rayon maintains an excellent level of fiber lengths, resulting in a consistently high level of mechanical properties. Energetic recycling of rayon fabrics in thermoset composites is nearly CO2 neutral. In contrast to fabrics made of carbon fiber or glass fiber, woven Rayon fabrics can be thermally utilized in common waste incineration plants without any problems. Rayon products that reached the end of their life cycle can also be used as fuel for biogas production with comparably high yields.

As rayon fiber consists of the natural material cellulose, it is free of plastic. This means that no particles of micro plastic could enter the environment – neither during its usage, nor in the end-of-life treatment. In combination with its extraordinary mechanical properties, this makes rayon the perfect fit for several critical applications where plastic is not an option.
